Police are searching for those responsible after gunfire struck 33-year-old Terron Williams in a Lake Highlands shopping center parking lot.
DALLAS, Texas — A 33-year-old man was fatally shot while driving near a Family Dollar in northeast Dallas on Labor Day, then crossed Walnut Hill Lane and crashed into a tree as his attackers left the area, according to police and local reports.
The shooting happened shortly after noon Sept. 7 near Plano Road and Walnut Hill Lane in the Lake Highlands area. Dallas police said officers responded at about 12:20 p.m. and determined that unknown suspects fired at a man who was driving a vehicle. The driver was struck by gunfire and crashed into a tree. Dallas Fire-Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene. Later local reports identified the victim as Terron Williams, 33.
The killing unfolded in daylight at a busy commercial intersection and was partly captured by surveillance cameras at nearby businesses. Video obtained by FOX 4 and NBC 5 appeared to show a white car moving through the shopping center parking lot as shots were fired. The vehicle then went over a curb, crossed Walnut Hill Lane and came to a stop near a storage business on the other side of the road.
FOX 4 reported that another surveillance angle showed a white SUV arriving in the Family Dollar parking lot shortly before a person wearing dark clothing appeared to emerge and fire toward the white car. The station reported that the white SUV later left the area. Police have not publicly said how many people fired weapons, how many suspects they are seeking or whether investigators have identified any of the vehicles as belonging to a suspect.
A manager at the Family Dollar told FOX 4 that Williams had entered the store around noon, made a purchase and returned to his vehicle before the shooting. Police have not publicly confirmed what happened immediately before the gunfire or whether Williams had any interaction with the person or people responsible. Investigators also have not announced a motive or said whether they believe Williams was specifically targeted.
The attack triggered a large police response around the shopping center and intersection. NBC 5 reported that Walnut Hill Lane was blocked for hours while officers investigated and that numerous evidence markers were visible in the Family Dollar parking lot. FOX 4 also reported that the white Toyota Camry believed to have been driven by Williams showed multiple apparent bullet impacts on its passenger side. Investigators received surveillance footage from businesses in the area.
Landry Honeycutt, who lives near the intersection, told NBC 5 he was in his garage when he heard gunfire nearby. He described the shots as rapid and said he later opened his gate and saw that the victim’s vehicle had crossed the street. Emergency vehicles began arriving shortly afterward. The account was consistent with surveillance video showing the car continuing across the parking lot and roadway after the shooting.
Another nearby resident, Cole Hassell, told FOX 4 that he and his wife returned from a Labor Day gathering to find the police investigation close to their home. Streets in the immediate area were affected as officers documented the scene. The Family Dollar parking lot was also restricted for much of the day while investigators gathered evidence and reviewed video from surrounding businesses.
Initial reports on Monday said police had not released the victim’s identity because relatives still needed to be notified. By Tuesday, local reports identified him as Williams. A summary of Dallas police information published by DFW Scanner described the attackers as unknown suspects and confirmed the victim was 33 years old. Earlier news reports had generally referred to an unknown person firing at the driver, leaving the precise number of suspected attackers unclear.
No arrest had been announced as of Sept. 8, and authorities had not released a public description of a suspected shooter. Police also had not disclosed whether they had recovered a weapon, established a motive or determined what relationship, if any, existed between Williams and those responsible. Those questions remain central to an investigation that began with a midday shooting witnessed indirectly by employees, residents and surveillance cameras around the shopping center.
Dallas police are continuing to investigate the homicide under case No. 132059-2026. Police have directed information about the case to Detective A. Joslin. As of Tuesday evening, investigators had not announced an arrest or publicly explained what led to the shooting.
