Man Served Divorce Paper Shoots Wife 15 Times

A 44-year-old Michigan man, Marcus Lofton, has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of his wife. Lofton fatally shot his wife, Alicia Lofton, 38, fifteen times on August 17, 2023, a day after she had served him with divorce papers. The couple had only been married for half a year.

The guilty plea from Lofton followed a mistrial on the same charges, as the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. During the sentencing, Lofton chose to remain silent but was present in the courtroom to hear from those who loved the woman he had killed. The sentencing was reported by local news outlet MLive.com.

Arthur Joseph, Alicia Lofton’s father, expressed his anger towards Marcus Lofton after Judge Scott Noto announced the sentence. Joseph, struggling to contain his emotions, stated, “I just want the world to know that this guy is a piece of garbage. I wish I could handle this and serve justice on his a— right now.”

The relationship between Marcus Lofton and his late wife had been strained, culminating in his arrest for a domestic violence incident against her in May 2023. Following this incident, Lofton was prohibited from contacting her. As Alicia Lofton prepared to file for divorce and sell their shared home, Marcus Lofton’s temper escalated.

The day after Alicia Lofton served her husband with divorce papers, he arrived at their home to collect his belongings, leading to a confrontation. Marcus Lofton seized his wife’s Glock pistol from a drawer, and the gun discharged. Alicia Lofton attempted to escape by locking herself in a bathroom and then trying to flee through a window, but Marcus Lofton forced the door open and shot her multiple times before fleeing in his SUV.

Alicia Lofton’s body was discovered on the lawn outside their home after neighbors alerted the police. She had sustained multiple fatal gunshot wounds. Alicia Lofton was a mother to three adult children.
