A 26-year-old man from California, Austin Eis, has admitted to a violent crime spree in 2023 that resulted in multiple hospitalizations and the death of a 15-year-old boy. Eis, who prosecutors say harbored a fascination for mass murderers, pleaded guilty to a series of felony charges related to his violent rampage in Ventura County, which was reportedly motivated by personal frustrations.
Eis’s crime spree included a series of violent acts, such as stabbing and pepper-spraying a Walmart greeter, and running over a group of students from his former high school, Westlake High School in West Lake Village, with his car. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office reported that the teenager who lost his life, Wesley Welling, was among the students Eis targeted with his vehicle on April 18, 2023, in an attempt to cause a mass casualty event. Three other victims suffered severe injuries that required surgeries and extensive medical treatment.
Eis’s violent actions began in the afternoon when he entered a Walmart in Simi Valley and assaulted a store greeter by spitting, pepper spraying, and stabbing him multiple times. He then dragged another employee across the store. After this initial attack, Eis broke into his parents’ house, where he stole multiple weapons while brandishing a replica firearm and a knife.
Eis then targeted a group of Westlake students, driving into them intentionally. Witnesses reported that Eis accelerated towards the students before striking them with his vehicle, which overturned after colliding with a bus stop. Eis confessed to targeting the students due to personal frustrations and a desire to commit mass violence.
During the investigation into Eis’s violent spree, authorities discovered his dark obsession with death and violence. Investigators found a history of violent threats, including admiration for mass murderers and adherence to extremist ideologies. Eis’s text messages and communications revealed that he had been planning to carry out acts of violence for years.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Amber Lee, who prosecuted the case, stated that Eis’s plea deal reflected the full scope and severity of his actions. Eis could face a possible sentence of 85 years to life. Lee emphasized that the sentence would reflect Eis’s premeditated and calculated actions, as well as the horrific nature of his crime spree.
Eis pleaded guilty to a total of 10 felony charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and false imprisonment by violence. His sentencing is scheduled for April 14. District Attorney Nasarenko stated that while no number of guilty pleas could alleviate the victims’ anguish, they would ensure Eis’s removal from society and hold him accountable for his crimes.
