A Florida resident, Jamie Michael Lane, 51, is currently in custody after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with a baseball bat, leaving her in a critical condition. The incident took place in their shared residence in Homestead, a suburb of Miami, according to Miami-Dade County court records. Lane is facing charges of attempted felony murder.
The police were alerted to the incident after the assault had taken place. The victim, who had been in a relationship with Lane for seven years and cohabitating for four, informed the officers that they had been arguing throughout the day. She eventually stopped responding to Lane’s phone calls, which reportedly led to him arriving at their residence in a state of agitation.
According to the victim’s account, Lane forcefully entered their home after she refused to let him in. He allegedly broke down the door and entered the premises wielding a wooden baseball bat. The victim reported that Lane struck her three times – once on her forehead, once on the back of her head, and once on her left arm.
The victim pleaded with Lane to stop the assault, fearing for her life. She stated that Lane stopped the attack, fell to his knees, prayed, and asked for forgiveness before fleeing the scene. A witness corroborated the victim’s account of the incident.
Following the assault, the victim was transported to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital. She was diagnosed with a left frontal hematoma and potential skull or facial fractures. A subsequent search warrant was executed at the residence, where investigators discovered a broken wooden bat believed to be the weapon used in the assault.
Lane turned himself into the authorities the following day. He is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond, with the crime classified as domestic violence. Lane has been assigned a public defender and a stay-away order has been issued to prevent him from contacting the victim. His arraignment is scheduled for October 14.
