A Michigan resident, Steven Wheeler, 31, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his estranged wife, Jordan Wheeler, 33. The verdict was delivered on January 23, following a six-day trial. The jury, consisting of an equal number of men and women, had the option to convict Wheeler of either first-degree, premeditated murder or the lesser charge of second-degree murder.
The trial was marked by the heartrending testimony of the couple’s 9-year-old son, who was one of two children present at the home during the tragic incident in October 2023. After three hours of deliberation, the jury found Wheeler guilty of first-degree murder.
Among the evidence presented against Wheeler was his own voice, captured on a 911 call made by Jordan during their violent altercation on October 19, 2023. The jury requested this piece of evidence during their deliberations, along with a video recorded by Jordan as she arrived at her estranged husband’s residence to collect their children and documentation about their child custody agreement.
The couple was in the midst of a divorce at the time of the incident. Jordan had moved in with her sister during the separation. On the fateful night of October 19, she received a call from one of her children expressing concern about their father’s behavior. She rushed to the house, recording the confrontation, and was met at the door by an enraged Steven Wheeler.
The situation escalated in the kitchen, where Jordan dialed 911. During the call, she confirmed the presence of firearms in the house. While still on the call, Steven retrieved a gun and shot his wife in the head five times. His chilling words during the act were captured on the call.
The couple’s two children, aged 7 and 8 at the time, had fled to their mother’s car parked outside the home just before the shooting began. The older child testified that he heard the gunfire and saw flashes inside the house.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested Steven Wheeler, who now faces the possibility of life imprisonment without parole. His sentencing is scheduled for February 26.
