Police are searching for a group of people accused of shooting the driver before his vehicle slammed through the residence.
AVONDALE, Ariz. — A man who was shot multiple times Friday night lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an Avondale home, striking and injuring a woman who was inside, police said.
Avondale police responded shortly after 9 p.m. Aug. 7 to an area near Avondale Boulevard and Van Buren Street after receiving reports of gunfire and a vehicle crashing into a house. Investigators determined that the adult male driver had been shot by a group of unidentified people before his vehicle went through the home’s wall. The driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The woman who was inside the home was also taken to a hospital after being struck during the crash. Police later said she had been released. FOX 10 Phoenix reported that the woman’s daughter said her mother suffered several broken ribs when the vehicle entered the front room of the house.
The people accused of shooting the driver fled before officers arrived, and no arrests had been announced as of the latest reports. Police have not identified the driver or publicly released information about the people they are seeking. Investigators also have not announced a motive for the shooting.
Police said they do not believe the driver and the group involved in the shooting knew one another. Some people in the neighborhood raised the possibility that the incident began as an attempted robbery, but authorities had not confirmed that account. Investigators had not released details explaining what happened immediately before the gunfire.
Neighbors described hearing gunshots followed by a loud crash as the vehicle went into the home. The impact left a large opening in the structure and debris around the property. Witnesses reported hearing screaming after the collision as residents and neighbors responded to the damaged home.
FOX 10 reported that additional gunfire struck another nearby residence but did not cause any other reported injuries. The damaged property remained surrounded by debris Saturday as investigators continued examining the shooting and crash scene.
The Avondale Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau is handling the case. Authorities are working to identify the people involved in the shooting and determine why the driver was targeted. Police had not announced that any suspect was in custody by the time of the latest local reports.
The driver remained in critical condition in the most recent update, while the woman injured inside the home had been released from the hospital. The investigation remained active, with the identity of the suspected shooters and the circumstances leading to the gunfire still unresolved.
