Mass Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Including a 10-Year-Old Boy

A devastating event transpired in Newark, New Jersey, on a recent Saturday evening, leading to the loss of two lives, including a 10-year-old boy, and leaving three others wounded. A 21-year-old woman was among the deceased, while an 11-year-old boy and two men, aged 19 and 60, are currently recuperating in stable condition. The incident, which took place around 7 p.m., was confirmed by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Local inhabitants painted a horrifying picture of the incident, recounting the sound of rapid gunfire followed by terrified screams. An anonymous resident reported hearing “more than six” gunshots to NJ.com. The police swiftly cordoned off the area, barring residents from returning to their homes that night.

The victims who tragically lost their lives were immediately rushed to University Hospital following the shooting. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, reacting to the incident, urged the perpetrator to turn themselves in.

Mayor Baraka also addressed the heartbreaking death of a 2-year-old who fell from a window in the city earlier that day in his statement. He characterized the day as “dark and devastating,” expressing grief over the loss of young lives and denouncing the senseless act of violence.

The shooting occurred on the 300 block of Chancellor Avenue. The following morning, investigators discovered at least 17 evidence markers at the scene. Law enforcement officers, including uniformed police and plainclothes detectives, were observed meticulously searching the predominantly residential area.

Newark, the largest city in New Jersey with a population exceeding 300,000, has experienced a 13% increase in violent crime in the year leading up to May 2024, according to data from the Newark Public Safety Collaborative (NPSC) at Rutgers University. However, the NPSC data also indicates a significant drop in aggravated assaults, robberies, and homicides between January 1, 2025, and October 26.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has appealed to the public for any information related to the case. A reward of $10,000 has been offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
