Chicago, Illinois – A tragic mass shooting took place in Chicago on Saturday, resulting in the death of a young girl and multiple injuries. According to Deputy Chief Don Jerome of the Chicago Police Department, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert of gunshots in the area and found several people shot near West 52nd Street and South Damen Avenue.
The shooting, which happened during an outdoor family gathering, claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl identified as Ariana Molina. A total of eight individuals were initially reported as injured, including five adults and three children. However, updated information revealed that a total of 10 people were injured, including two men, five women, and three boys.
The father of the young girl, Jose Molina, described the terrifying incident, stating that the assailants used assault rifles and shot his daughter in the head. He also revealed that his wife and other family members were among those injured in the shooting. The Chicago Police Department has not yet provided further updates on the incident.
Deputy Chief Don Jerome stated that the shooting was not a random act of violence and is believed to be gang-related. Witnesses reported seeing a black sedan approaching the scene before shots were fired. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in their investigation.
The shooting occurred during a celebration for Ariana’s aunt’s confirmation. Family members were gathered outside, about to cut the cake, when the shooting began. Jose Molina initially thought the sounds were fireworks until he saw his daughter lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
As of now, no one has been taken into custody, and police suspect that there were two shooters involved. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his condolences for the victims, emphasizing that the act of violence has no place in the community.
