Two men suffered life-threatening injuries after gunfire erupted near the Reign Event Center in the city’s Uptown neighborhood.
MINNEAPOLIS — Nine people were wounded in a shooting outside a crowded nightclub early Sunday, including two men who suffered life-threatening injuries, Minneapolis police said. Both critically wounded victims were expected to survive, and no arrests had been announced by Sunday afternoon.
Officers were called shortly before 12:30 a.m. July 19 to the Reign Event Center in the 2900 block of Hennepin Avenue. Police said a fight or other altercation outside the venue escalated into gunfire while a large crowd was gathered in the entertainment district. Investigators were working to identify everyone who fired and determine whether some shots came from a vehicle.
The victims were seven men and two women between the ages of 18 and 27, police said. Four wounded people were found near the nightclub, while five others arrived at hospitals separately. Police said the victims’ injuries ranged from non-life-threatening wounds to critical injuries suffered by two men, ages 20 and 21.
Officers arrived less than one minute after the initial report of gunfire and called for help because of the number of injured people and the size of the crowd, police said. Personnel from all five Minneapolis police precincts responded to assist the victims, control the scene and preserve evidence for investigators.
A 20-year-old man with life-threatening injuries was among those found near the venue. A 21-year-old man and two women, ages 22 and 27, were also found there with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. They were taken to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment.
An 18-year-old man later arrived at Hennepin Healthcare with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Four other men sought treatment at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Police said a 21-year-old man with life-threatening injuries was transferred to Hennepin Healthcare, while three men, ages 20, 21 and 22, had injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The city’s Firearm Assault Shoot Team was leading the investigation. Police said investigators were gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing whether the gunfire involved a moving or parked vehicle. Authorities had not released descriptions of possible suspects or said what caused the initial confrontation.
Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson condemned the shooting as a reckless act in a crowded entertainment area that placed many people at risk. Community Safety Commissioner Todd Barnette said the investigation would require cooperation among police, other agencies and community members.
Mayor Jacob Frey called the shooting intolerable and said the city would work to hold those responsible accountable. The mayor also said Minneapolis needed continued police hiring, partnerships with other agencies and technology to help investigators prevent and solve gun crimes.
The same block was the site of another shooting in June 2020 that wounded 11 people. Police have not reported a connection between that case, the nightclub or Sunday’s shooting. No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, and investigators continued searching for suspects and reviewing evidence.
