Police said the victims’ gunshot injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
THIBODAUX, La. — Seven people were wounded Sunday night when gunfire broke out outside a nightclub in Thibodaux, police said, prompting an investigation near East 10th and Narrow streets.
Thibodaux Police Chief Bryan Zeringue said detectives confirmed seven people suffered gunshot-related injuries. Police said the injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening. Several other people were hurt while trying to flee the area after shots were fired.
The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. May 24 outside a nightclub near the intersection of East 10th Street and Narrow Street, according to police. Officers responded to the scene as people scattered from the area. Zeringue said detectives were processing evidence, interviewing witnesses and following leads tied to the shooting.
Authorities had not released a suspect description or motive by Tuesday. Police also had not said how many people may have fired weapons. The investigation remained active as officers reviewed evidence from the scene and gathered statements from people who were nearby when the gunfire began.
Local television video showed crime scene tape still visible near the area Monday. A neighbor told WDSU that residents were tired of repeated late-night problems, including fighting, loud music and large crowds. Police declined an interview with the station and pointed to the department’s written statement.
Thibodaux is in Lafourche Parish, about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans. The shooting added to concern about violence around nightlife areas in Louisiana, though officials did not immediately connect the case to any wider pattern. Police said the focus remained on identifying those involved and collecting usable evidence.
No charges had been announced as of Tuesday. Detectives were expected to continue witness interviews and follow up on tips, video and physical evidence. Police said more information would be released when it becomes available.
