A violent incident involving a knife unfolded at a busy train station in Hamburg, Germany, leaving several individuals injured, some critically, as per local law enforcement. A woman has been taken into custody for the attack.
The suspect reportedly targeted individuals on the platform between tracks 13 and 14 at the station around 6 p.m. The station, situated in the center of Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city, is a major hub for local, regional, and long-distance trains.
Initial information from Hamburg’s fire service suggested that six individuals had sustained life-threatening injuries, while another three were seriously injured, and three others had minor injuries. However, police later clarified that the exact numbers were not yet confirmed, but did confirm that several individuals had sustained critical injuries.
The suspect, a 39-year-old German woman, was taken into custody at the scene without any resistance. After examining video footage, police believe she acted alone. The weapon used in the attack, a knife, was recovered by the authorities.
At this point, there is no evidence to suggest a political motive behind the attack. Police spokesperson Florian Abbenseth stated that investigators are considering the possibility that the suspect may have been dealing with mental health issues.
Hours after the incident, a high-speed ICE train remained at the platform with its doors open. However, Abbenseth clarified that the train was not part of the crime scene.
The incident left railway operator Deutsche Bahn “deeply shocked.” Four tracks at the station were closed on Friday evening, causing delays and diversions for some long-distance trains. It’s important to note that carrying weapons, including knives, is prohibited at the station and on local transport in Hamburg.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his shock at the news, conveying his thoughts to Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher and the victims’ families during a phone call on Friday evening.
