An 18-year-old Florida woman, Tripura Merriex, is facing felony child neglect charges after allegedly leaving her two-year-old daughter locked in a hot car while she and her siblings watched a movie. The incident occurred at the Regal Cinema 90 in Lake City, where the heat index was reported to be 107 degrees at the time.
Local police were alerted to the situation by witnesses who noticed the child alone in a 2002 Cadillac Escalade. Officers were forced to break a window to gain access to the child, who was found in the front passenger seat. According to the arrest report, the child was visibly distressed, with a flushed red appearance, profuse sweating, and crying.
Merriex’s demeanor during the incident was described as nonchalant by the police. She claimed that she had accidentally locked her daughter in the car and seemed to downplay the seriousness of the situation. report indicates that the child was left in the vehicle for at least 30 minutes.
According to the police, Merriex had brought her daughter to the cinema to watch the “Smurfs” movie with her siblings. However, the child’s loud crying reportedly caused a disturbance, prompting Merriex to take her to the lobby. This was repeated several times before Merriex allegedly decided to leave her daughter in the car.
An employee of the cinema told investigators that Merriex appeared annoyed by her daughter’s crying. She would periodically leave the movie to check on the child, and eventually delegated this task to her siblings. The temperature at the time was reported to be 94 degrees, with a heat index of 107.
In subsequent interviews, Merriex’s husband described her as having a history of irrational decision-making, particularly when dealing with their daughter’s crying. He accused her of lacking patience in caring for the child and reacting negatively to parenting-related stress.
Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler commended his officers for their, emphasizing that leaving a child unattended in a vehicle under such conditions is unacceptable. He urged all parents to prioritize their children’s well-being at all times. Merriex is currently being held at the Columbia County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
