Mother Accused of Fatally Beating Son With Extension Cord

A Seattle mother is facing accusations of fatally beating her 14-year-old son with an extension cord after he failed to complete his chores, according to local law enforcement. The woman, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, reportedly became enraged when her son did not finish his assigned tasks on a Thursday afternoon.

The police report, initially obtained by local ABC affiliate KOMO, states that the mother demanded her son to undress before she retrieved an extension cord to discipline him. Authorities allege that the woman told her son it was “butt cutting time” before pushing him against a wall, causing him to hit his head, lose consciousness, and fall to the floor.

The teenager was then reportedly commanded to stand up, to which he complied. The mother is said to have continued the assault for approximately an hour. The 29-year-old woman allegedly whipped her son with the extension cord until he became unresponsive. She then waited for about five minutes before calling 911 to report the incident.

Police officers arrived at the scene on the 4000 block of 14th Avenue South at 2:17 pm on Thursday. They found the boy suffering from multiple injuries. The Seattle Fire Department also responded, providing emergency medical aid to the boy who was then transported to a local medical center in critical condition.

Despite all efforts to save his life, the boy was pronounced dead, as stated in a January 30 press release from the Seattle Police Department. The mother was subsequently arrested on suspicion of homicide. The woman declined to appear in court for her initial hearing on Friday afternoon, according to KOMO. Her bail was set at $3 million, even after her public defender argued for her release.

The woman’s attorney, Zelena Jones, acknowledged the gravity of the situation but also highlighted the trauma the mother is experiencing from the loss of her son. Jones argued that the woman’s incarceration would add to her trauma, especially given her limited history, cooperation with law enforcement, and limited resources.

The mother is currently being held at the King County Jail in downtown Seattle. Police anticipate that she will be publicly identified and charged by Tuesday.
