HIALEAH, Fla. – A tragic incident unfolded in Hialeah on Thursday night as a mother of a newborn was found dead in her home, with her 13-year-old son suspected of being the killer. The Hialeah Police Department is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Irina Garcia.
Authorities responded to a distressing 911 call around 11:30 p.m., made by the teenager himself, claiming that he had just killed his mother. Upon arrival at the apartment on West 79th Place, officers discovered the lifeless body of 39-year-old Irina Garcia in her bedroom. Shockingly, a 14-day-old baby was found unharmed in a crib next to her.
Garcia had been stabbed multiple times, according to the police. The 13-year-old, who is an eighth-grader at iMater Academy Middle School in Hialeah, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder. A judge at the Children’s Courthouse in Miami found probable cause in the case and ordered the teenager to be held in secure detention for 21 days, pending a hearing on November 2nd.
The husband of the victim, who works as a truck driver, was away on business at the time of the incident. Investigators are currently trying to determine the motive behind the tragic event.
Lt. Eddie Rodriguez of the Hialeah Police expressed his shock and sadness over the incident, stating, “This is heartbreaking, I never would have imagined something like this, a 13-year-old child taking his mother’s life. It is a sad story.” Rodriguez also mentioned that there were no previous calls or indications of any mental health issues within the family.
The Imater Academy Middle School, where the teenager is enrolled, released a statement expressing their deep sadness over the incident. The school principal, Teresa Santalo, stated, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family involved during this incredibly difficult time.”
