MURPHY, N.C. – Authorities in North Carolina are investigating the tragic deaths of 4-year-old twin boys who were found deceased inside a home. The mother, Genevieve Ellen Springer, has been taken into custody on two counts of first-degree murder, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office. The heartbreaking incident occurred in Murphy, a town in far west North Carolina, on Saturday morning.
The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office received a distressing call around 10 a.m. from the boys’ father, who had gone to Springer’s home to pick up the kids as part of their custody agreement. Upon entering the residence, he made the devastating discovery and immediately contacted 911. The authorities identified Springer as a suspect and later found her at a hospital in north Georgia. She was discharged on Sunday and has been held without bond at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
The cause of death for the twin boys has not yet been released by the deputies, who are also yet to suggest a possible motive for the alleged crime. According to the father, he last saw his sons alive on February 26. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the time and date of the deaths. The warrants for Springer’s arrest indicate that the incident occurred between February 26 and March 2.
Sheriff Dustin D. Smith, in response to the tragedy, has called for prayers for the victims’ family, friends, and all those involved in responding to the incident. Smith emphasized the importance of protecting children, stating that they are the most precious resource and our hope for the future.
