A prominent New York physician and her infant child were found dead in their Westchester home in what authorities have determined to be a murder-suicide. The deceased, Dr. Krystal Cascetta, was a respected Hematology-Oncology specialist at Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she treated patients at two different locations in Queens.
According to the police, Dr. Cascetta is believed to have shot her child on Saturday morning before turning the gun on herself. The incident occurred at their residence in Westchester, a property valued at around $1 million, which she shared with her husband, Tim Talty, 37.
Dr. Cascetta, 40, was a graduate of Albany Medical College and completed her residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
The Mt. Sinai community expressed their sorrow over the tragic incident. In a statement released on Saturday night, they extended their deepest sympathies to Dr. Cascetta’s family, friends, colleagues, and patients, acknowledging the significant loss to their community.
The age of the child remains uncertain, but social media posts suggest the baby was born around March. Dr. Cascetta and Mr. Talty, who owns the protein bar company Talty Bars, were married in 2019 in a ceremony in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
According to the company’s website, Dr. Cascetta used her medical and scientific knowledge to advise on the creation of their product. The website also shares a touching tribute to Dr. Cascetta, stating that her aspiration to become a doctor was deeply ingrained in her from a young age. It also reveals that a personal tragedy in her early life, the death of her mother’s best friend from breast cancer, influenced her decision to specialize in Medical Oncology.
The incident remains under investigation by the state police.
