Shooting at Event Leaves One Dead, Five Wounded

One person was killed and five others were wounded Saturday night when an altercation at a trail-ride gathering in northeast Houston escalated into a shootout behind a strip center along the 11300 block of Homestead Road, police said. Officers already at the scene to clear the parking lot rushed to help victims and secure the area.

Police said the shooting began around 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, as “possibly hundreds” of people were assembled near Homestead and Guadalupe for festivities tied to a trail ride. Investigators said several people opened fire during a fight behind the businesses, sending the crowd running and scattering vehicles and horses. As of Monday, one person had died and five others were being treated for gunshot wounds. Detectives with the homicide division are reviewing surveillance video, collecting shell casings and interviewing witnesses while the search continues for the shooters.

Witnesses described a surge of panic as shots crackled from behind the center and people sprinted across the lot. Officers said they provided aid to three victims at the scene while three others went to hospitals on their own. Police said the wounded include a 20-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy in critical condition, and four others—a 16-year-old boy, a 20-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman and a 22-year-old woman—in stable condition. “This started as a fight and turned into people shooting at each other,” the department said in a Sunday update. Patrol units closed portions of Homestead Road and taped off the parking lot as technicians photographed vehicles, mapped bullet paths and marked evidence.

Authorities said officers were called to the center earlier in the evening to help disperse a crowd that had gathered ahead of a trail-ride event. The fatal victim’s name had not been released by police as of Monday pending confirmation by the medical examiner and family notification. Investigators have not said how many guns were used or how many shooters were involved. No officers fired their weapons, police said. At least some of the gunfire was captured on surveillance video, and detectives are seeking footage from nearby storefronts to establish a timeline of movements before and after the first shots.

The Homestead corridor is a busy commercial stretch north of East Little York Road where large weekend gatherings occasionally spill into parking lots. Trail rides and associated meetups draw riders, families and vendors, according to community members who frequent the events. Police said the crowd Saturday was “large,” with vehicles lining driveways and horses visible near the storefronts. Officers remained on scene through the night—more than 13 hours, according to onlookers—to process the area and tow vehicles that could contain evidence. Emergency responders set up triage near the front of the center while crime scene teams worked behind the buildings where the fight began.

Detectives said they are canvassing for witnesses who saw the initial fight and for anyone who can identify those who fired. The homicide division is leading the case with assistance from gang and analytics units. Investigators said they are reviewing 911 recordings, social media video and store cameras to match muzzle flashes and trajectories to specific shooters. A preliminary case file will go to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office once suspects are identified, a standard step that can lead to filings such as murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon or evidence tampering. No arrests had been announced as of Monday, and police did not release descriptions of any suspects.

By late night, the strip center’s parking lot was dotted with evidence markers and hazard lights from idling cars. A man who had come to meet relatives for the ride said people were listening to music and milling around when the shots started. “It turned chaotic in seconds—people ran, some crawled behind trucks,” he said. Store employees who stayed inside described officers moving injured people to safer spots and loading them into ambulances. Another bystander said horses were led away from the back lot as police pushed the crowd to the street and closed the driveways. Residents in nearby homes reported hearing bursts of gunfire and sirens stretching past midnight.

As of Monday afternoon, police said the investigation is active and the next official update is expected after detectives review additional video and complete hospital interviews with surviving victims. The medical examiner will release the deceased person’s name and cause of death once identification is confirmed and relatives are notified.
