Gun Laws Changing In New York In Response To Mass Shootings

NY governor signs law raising age to own semiautomatic rifle – The Associated Press

Governor of New York Kathy Hochul signed 10 bills passed by state lawmakers last week in the wake of the mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas. The legislation bans people under 21 from buying semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15-style weapon used in the Buffalo attack.

The legislation will also require licenses for semiautomatic rifle buyers, and restrict sales of bullet-resistant vests and armor to certain professions.

New York passed tough new gun laws last week after two mass shootings involving 18-year-old gunmen. The governor said the state will continue to invest in the prevention of gun-related crimes by partnering with local communities and putting pressure on Congress.

New Yorkers face stiffer barriers to buying bulletproof vests and body armor, but state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins dismissed concerns about how the new law would affect ordinary New Yorkers.

New York’s red flag law was tweaked by newly signed legislation, and a threat of mass harm is now a crime punishable by up to a year in jail. Other measures aim to prevent gun crimes associated with gang violence that has occurred at a faster clip within the five boroughs.

New York Democrats used the gun control push to vilify the GOP ahead of elections this November, and ordinary New Yorkers said they hope new laws will help curb gun violence.

Even one of the men shot in the altercation admitted Rittenhouse acted in self-defense, which the defense team also demonstrated throughout the trial. After Rittenshouse’s acquittal, another gun advocacy group labeled the 18-year-old a warrior for gun …
