Teacher Accused of Selling Pills to Student

Langston Carter was fired after his arrest at a Montgomery charter school and faces multiple felony drug and firearm charges.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A former Alabama charter school teacher faces multiple felony charges after authorities accused him of selling prescription pills to a student inside a classroom, according to court records and Montgomery police.

Langston Carter, 30, was taken into custody Oct. 22 after police were called to L.E.A.D. Academy in Montgomery. Court records reviewed by local news organizations say a student was found with two pills containing 5 milligrams of oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 milligrams of acetaminophen. The student told investigators the pills came from Carter, who was his teacher. The allegations have not been proven in court.

The student told officers that Carter had offered to sell him pills on multiple occasions before he agreed to buy two for $10, according to court filings. The records say Carter instructed the student to send the payment to his girlfriend through Cash App. Because the student did not have an account, another student allegedly sent the payment for him. Investigators later verified the transaction, according to the filings.

After the payment was made, Carter allegedly gave the student the pills inside the classroom, court documents state. L.E.A.D. Academy said students were placed on lockdown that Thursday afternoon at the direction of the Montgomery Police Department to protect the integrity of the investigation. The school later confirmed Carter had been terminated from his teaching position.

Investigators also searched Carter’s vehicle after a police K-9 conducted an open-air sniff outside it and indicated the possible presence of narcotics, according to the court filings. Officers reported finding a sling-style bag in the trunk containing marijuana, a digital scale, empty plastic bags, mushroom-infused gummies, additional pills and other items associated with narcotics.

Court records cited by WSFA and Arizona’s Family also say officers found a loaded Beretta 9 mm handgun inside the vehicle. Authorities reported recovering 6.9 grams of marijuana, 18.9 grams of mushroom-infused gummies and 19 additional pills containing 5 milligrams of oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 milligrams of acetaminophen.

Montgomery police said Carter faces several felony charges, including possession of a firearm on school property, two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and first-degree possession of marijuana. The charges describe accusations against Carter and do not establish guilt.

Carter was being held in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on $300,000 bond, according to reports citing jail and court records. Publicly reviewed reports did not establish whether he had entered a plea or whether an attorney had appeared on his behalf.

The investigation remained active after Carter’s arrest. Authorities had not publicly said whether they believed other students received drugs from him, and no additional alleged transactions had been confirmed in the reports reviewed. Carter is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
