A massive search operation is currently in progress for Gary Jones, a teacher from Georgia, who disappeared over a week ago while celebrating his 50th birthday on a fishing trip with his fiancée. Jones, a teacher and coach at Westminster Schools, and his fiancée, Joycelyn Wilson, were last seen on February 8. Their boat was later found empty and circling on Lake Oconee, a popular recreational spot about 70 miles east of Atlanta.
The following day, Wilson’s body was recovered from the lake, not far from where Jones’ shoes were discovered. Despite the ongoing efforts of dive teams and cadaver dogs, Jones remains missing. Authorities are operating under the assumption that both individuals were thrown from the boat.
According to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, both Jones and Wilson were in good health and capable swimmers. However, Sills suggested that their small boat may not have been suitable for the conditions on the lake. He clarified that he was not assigning blame, but merely stating the facts of the situation.
On the day of their disappearance, the couple had rented a fishing boat and checked into a hotel to celebrate Jones’ birthday. Witnesses reported seeing them on the water around 3:30 p.m. Less than two hours later, their boat was found empty and circling, with Jones’ wallet, driver’s license, and hotel key card still onboard.
Wilson, a math instructor at Spelman College, was found the next day. The sheriff noted that she still had air in her lungs when she died, which could provide crucial information about the circumstances of her death. However, the official cause of death is pending the medical examiner’s report.
Richard Pickering, from the Emergency Dive Response Team, shared with volunteer boaters that one theory is that the couple was thrown into the water when the boat’s motor hit something. However, there was no visible damage to the boat to support this theory.
Among those participating in the search for Jones is Lauren Cherry, a former student of his. She described Jones as a father figure and said he would have been the first to join the search if any of his students were missing. Jones and Wilson, who first met 30 years ago at Clark Atlanta University, had recently reconnected and were planning to marry on March 14.
