In a horrifying incident, a 17-year-old girl was fatally stabbed in her bed by an intruder who also attempted to kill her mother. The incident occurred in the family’s home in Cefn Fforest, South Wales, on a Thursday morning. The victim, Lainie Williams, was killed, while her mother, Rhian Stephens, 38, was left severely injured.
The assailant’s attack was so sudden and terrifying that Lainie’s 8-year-old brother was forced to hide under his bed after hearing his sister’s screams. The family’s peaceful morning was shattered by the brutal attack, leaving the community in shock and grief.
The suspect, 18-year-old Cameron Cheng, was arrested and charged with Lainie’s murder and the attempted murder of Stephens. In addition to these charges, Cheng was also accused of possessing a bladed weapon in a public place. He is scheduled to appear in court in Newport on Monday.
The police were alerted to the incident around 7:15 a.m. on Thursday following reports of serious injuries at the family’s residence. Upon arrival, they found Lainie dead at the scene. According to the family, Cheng allegedly broke into the house after Stephen’s boyfriend had left for work.
The girl’s grandfather, Robert Stephens, recounted the horrifying incident, stating that Cheng “lunged at Lainie with the knife, and her mother heard her screams.” He further revealed that Lainie’s brother Carter was told by his mother to hide under his bed during the attack.
The quiet residential street was soon filled with the sounds of sirens, helicopters, and officers knocking on doors. The motive behind the shocking knife attack remains unknown. Stephens, who was severely injured in the attack, has since been discharged from the hospital.
The community is mourning the loss of Lainie, who was described as “brave and beautiful.” Her cousin Megan shared a heartfelt message on social media, saying, “There’s not enough words, rest peacefully our brave and beautiful cousin Lainie. Very fond childhood memories I’ll cherish forever. You were and still are so loved.”
A local resident described the teen as “the loveliest, kindest person who had a lot of friends.” Another resident expressed their shock, saying, “That poor girl had everything to live for, and now she is gone. At least the mother survived, but she will never get over what she witnessed.”
