Teen Kills Mother, Burns Body as Stepfather Watched

In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old man from Tennessee, Gabriel Vilchez, is accused of brutally murdering his mother with a baseball bat while his 64-year-old stepfather, David Gardiner, allegedly watched. The pair are then said to have burned her body in their backyard, later telling police that she had left for her native Costa Rica. Both Vilchez and Gardiner have been charged with murder and abuse of a corpse in relation to the death of 47-year-old Silvia Vilchez.

The Sequatchie County Sheriff’s Office received several calls reporting Silvia Vilchez missing on October 28. Gabriel Vilchez reportedly told authorities that his mother had left the country. Two days later, deputies conducted a search of the family’s residence in Lewis Chapel, located approximately 30 miles north of Chattanooga.

Inside the home, detectives discovered a gruesome crime scene in the home office. Detective Bryan Wilkie described the scene during a preliminary hearing, noting the presence of red-brown stains on the garbage and all four walls. Blood was also found on the desk, printer, baseboards, and walls.

The investigation led to the discovery of Silvia Vilchez’s body in a burn pit in the backyard. Authorities subsequently arrested Gabriel Vilchez and David Gardiner. Vilchez reportedly confessed to killing his mother with the bat and claimed that Gardiner also participated in the assault. The pair then allegedly wrapped her body in a carpet and moved it to a fire pit outside.

Vilchez told investigators that they spent the entire night feeding wood to the fire to keep it burning. Gardiner, however, provided a different account. He claimed to be a “heavy sleeper” and insisted that he slept through the entire incident, denying any knowledge of the crime.

Prosecutors, however, expressed doubt over Gardiner’s version of events, questioning how he could have slept through the strong odor of a burning body. The motive behind the brutal killing remains undisclosed by the authorities.

The court has ordered Gabriel Vilchez to be held in the Sequatchie County Jail without bond, while Gardiner’s bond has been set at $250,000. Their next court appearance is scheduled for January 30.
