Three brave passengers on a Jetstar flight in Australia managed to subdue a 17-year-old boy who had allegedly disguised himself as a maintenance worker to board the plane with a shotgun and ammunition, according to police reports. The incident occurred on a Sydney-bound Flight 610 on Thursday morning. The teenager reportedly exploited a breach in the security fencing at Avalon Airport to gain access to the aircraft.
The passengers, who acted swiftly to protect their fellow travelers, managed to overpower the teenager and held him down until security personnel arrived. The teenager had reportedly begun arguing with a flight attendant before revealing his weapon, which prompted the passengers to intervene.
One of the passengers, Barry Clark, recounted the incident to local ABC Radio. Clark, who was seated in the front row, observed the teenager arguing with a flight attendant. He noted that the teenager was convincingly dressed as a maintenance worker. As the argument escalated, the teenager brandished his gun, prompting Clark and two other passengers to intervene and prevent a potential disaster on the plane, which was carrying 160 passengers.
Clark explained his actions, stating, “You don’t think, you act. I’ve been taught from a boy to be responsible and look after others.” He added that he was confident in his ability to handle the situation due to his sporting background.
Another passenger, Kim McLeod, stated that the flight attendant was able to confront the suspect near the door because the maintenance crew had already cleared the plane for takeoff. McLeod noted that the suspect’s attire immediately raised suspicion.
Following the passengers’ intervention, police and airport security arrived promptly to apprehend the suspect and ensure the safe exit of all passengers. Victoria Police Superintendent Michael Reid praised the passengers’ quick thinking and bravery. He confirmed that police had recovered the shotgun and ammunition the suspect was carrying.
Superintendent Reid also revealed that the police had located the teenager’s car and were investigating the incident with counter-terrorism teams. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was not previously known to the police.
Jetstar, the sole commercial operator at Avalon Airport, expressed gratitude that the incident ended without any injuries. The airline confirmed that it was working with the police and the airport to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
