On Friday, Feb 10, a 17-year-old girl tragically passed away after she fell off a cliff face while hiking in Moab, Utah.
According to the Moab City Police Department, the teenage girl was out hiking with friends on the Moab Rim Trail located in the Kane Creek Canyon area. It was there that she slipped and fell around 30 feet down a “sheer rock face.”
Those that were accompanying her desperately attempted to rescue her but were unable to get to her and had to call 911. A search and rescue team was dispatched to the location, and after a two-hour process, they were able to recover her body.
The Grand County School District revealed that the victim was Zoe McKinney and released a statement expressing their condolences.
They will be providing support to those affected, including having therapists available at the school on Monday.
A statement from the district read. “Zoe was a remarkable student, and we will honor her memory throughout the remainder of this senior year.”
The Moab Police Department also expressed their sorrow. Chief Jared Garcia shared in a statement, “Moab Police Department wants to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.”
Garcia added, “We recognize the devastating impact the loss of a beloved young woman and friend has in this small community, but know that wonderful people of Moab will band together to support and comfort her family and friends at this time.”
In order to help Zoe’s family, a GoFundMe has been set up.
