In Miami-Dade County, Florida, a shocking incident unfolded as a 3-year-old girl accidentally shot herself while under the supervision of a relative who was engrossed in a football game. The incident, which was captured on a home surveillance camera, occurred in the Goulds area of southwest Miami-Dade.
The toddler, identified as Serenity, was supposed to be under the care of her grandmother, who was not present in the video footage at the time of the incident. Instead, 23-year-old Orlando Young, another relative, was seen celebrating a touchdown when the child picked up the unattended firearm and accidentally discharged it.
The video footage shows Young momentarily leaving his firearm unattended on the couch as he celebrated a touchdown. It was during this moment that Serenity picked up the gun and accidentally fired it. According to Serenity’s other grandmother, Robin Fuller, the bullet went through the child’s finger.
Upon hearing the gunshot, family members rushed Serenity to the hospital. Fuller, who was not present at the time of the incident, called the police upon receiving the news. The police arrived at the scene and inquired about the child’s whereabouts.
Serenity was initially taken to Homestead Hospital before being transferred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for surgery. She has since been released and is reportedly in good spirits, recovering at home with her mother.
Young was arrested on charges of child neglect following the incident. He appeared in bond court on Monday. Fuller has expressed her determination to ensure Serenity’s safety, stating that she does not want her granddaughter to return to the home where the incident occurred.
In a twist of events, Young is expected to face additional charges for an altercation with an inmate.
