A third person was treated and released after gunfire erupted at Hidden Gem Restaurant early Sunday, police said.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Two people were killed and a third person was injured in a shooting early Sunday at Hidden Gem Restaurant in Southfield, prompting a police investigation into what led to the gunfire.
Southfield police said officers were called at about 3:33 a.m. Aug. 9 to the restaurant at 16000 W. Nine Mile Road after receiving a report of shots fired. Officers found an adult man with apparent gunshot wounds when they arrived. He died at the scene, according to police. Two other people involved in the shooting made their own way to a hospital.
One of those two victims had been shot multiple times and later died at the hospital, police said. The third person suffered a graze wound, was treated and later released. Authorities had not publicly released the names or ages of the people killed as of late Sunday, and no additional serious injuries had been announced.
Police said there appeared to be no continuing threat to the public, but investigators had not announced what caused the shooting or publicly identified a suspect. No arrest had been announced in reports available Sunday. Authorities also had not released information about whether a weapon had been recovered or how many shots were fired.
A staff member at Hidden Gem told WDIV-TV that the restaurant is sometimes used as a private lounge and event space after normal operating hours. The staff member said two men who knew each other encountered one another and began arguing before gunfire followed. Police had not publicly confirmed that account or identified an argument as the motive for the shooting.
The shooting forced the building to close Sunday while the investigation continued. Local television footage showed police activity around the property, which houses several businesses in addition to the restaurant. People who arrived at the building later Sunday found that they could not enter while authorities continued their work at the scene.
Hidden Gem is located on West Nine Mile Road near Ascension Providence Hospital. Police had not publicly said whether the shooting occurred inside the restaurant, immediately outside it or elsewhere on the property. Officials also had not disclosed how many people were at the business when the gunfire began.
The deaths remained under active investigation Sunday night. Police continued working to determine the sequence of events, identify those involved and establish what led to the shooting. Authorities had not announced criminal charges or released a detailed account of the moments before the gunfire.
Southfield police said there was no additional threat to the public as investigators continued gathering information. The identities of the two people killed and further details about any suspect or motive had not been publicly released.
