Viral $47 Wedding Dress Bride Dies During Childbirth at 32

Kiara Brokenbrough, 32, was known for a $47 wedding dress and a $500 Los Angeles ceremony.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Kiara Janae Brokenbrough, a Southern California digital creator who went viral for a $47 wedding dress and $500 wedding, died March 30 as her first child was born, her family said. She was 32.

Brokenbrough’s death drew fresh attention to a couple whose low-cost 2022 wedding once made national headlines and to the risks Black women face in pregnancy and childbirth. Her husband, Joel Brokenbrough, is now caring for their son, Jonah, who arrived early and remains in a neonatal intensive care unit, according to family statements. The official cause of Kiara Brokenbrough’s death has not been publicly released.

Family members said Kiara and Joel Brokenbrough were expecting Jonah in June and had been preparing to move from West Virginia back to California to build a home near loved ones. Instead, relatives said, the family faced a sudden loss as Jonah entered the world. Joel Brokenbrough wrote in an April 13 social media tribute that he had begun to process the death of “my beautiful, God-fearing, Worshipping Wife.” The couple had shared much of their marriage, faith and pregnancy online, where followers first came to know them as a young pair who said they wanted a joyful wedding without debt.

Kiara Brokenbrough’s obituary said she was born Dec. 11, 1993, to Lori Gill Lacey and Ronald Draper and accepted Jesus as her savior as a youth at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Pomona. The notice described her as a writer, creator and encourager who documented her life in journals and on social media. It said she met Joel Brokenbrough while walking in her purpose and that the couple inspired others through their faith. The obituary said Jonah is “a fighter” and is showing “remarkable improvement” while in the NICU. Family members have not released the hospital name or detailed medical records tied to the birth.

The Brokenbroughs became widely known after their Feb. 12, 2022, wedding near Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California. They first met in Las Vegas in 2016, stayed in touch on social media, reconnected in 2018 and began dating soon after. They were engaged for one month before marrying. Their wedding drew attention because the total cost was about $500. Kiara Brokenbrough bought her dress from Shein for $47, and Joel Brokenbrough spent about $100 on his suit from Boohoo. The couple invited about 30 to 40 relatives and close friends and kept the guest count low enough that they did not need to buy a public permit for the outdoor site.

At the time, the couple said their goal was to start married life without taking on debt. Their largest expense was an arch that cost about $200, while relatives helped provide flowers and a cake. Their reception was held at Misty’s Lounge in Ontario, where the group arrived when the business opened and guests paid for their own food and drinks. “Our goal was to just be as minimal as possible,” Kiara Brokenbrough told Good Morning America in 2022. She also said she did not want to spend a large amount on a dress she would wear once for a few hours.

Joel Brokenbrough’s mother, Shaneka Greene, organized an online fundraiser for Joel and Jonah on April 3. The fundraiser said Kiara and Joel Brokenbrough had been married for four years and were preparing for their first child when the loss came. Greene wrote that Jonah had begun “his long journey to grow stronger and healthier each day.” By Sunday, the fundraiser had collected more than $114,000 toward a $150,000 goal, with about 2,500 donations listed. Greene said Joel would need physical, mental, spiritual and financial support as he becomes an only parent to a premature baby in intensive care.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in West Virginia has not publicly released autopsy details. State limits on release of such information generally keep autopsy records from public view unless they are provided to next of kin or law enforcement. No criminal case, lawsuit or public investigation has been announced in connection with Brokenbrough’s death. Family statements have focused on grief, Jonah’s medical progress and support for Joel Brokenbrough. A viewing and celebration of life were held April 20 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Pomona, followed by interment at Olivewood Memorial Park in Riverside.

Brokenbrough’s death also landed in a wider national discussion about Black maternal health. Federal health data released in March showed 649 women died of maternal causes in the United States in 2024, with an overall maternal mortality rate of 17.9 deaths per 100,000 live births. For Black women, the rate was 44.8 deaths per 100,000 live births, more than three times the rate for white women. The rates are based on deaths during pregnancy or within 42 days of the end of pregnancy from causes tied to pregnancy or its management, not from accidental or unrelated causes.

For many people who followed the Brokenbroughs, the news was striking because their public story began with an image of joy and restraint rather than tragedy. In their 2022 interviews, Kiara Brokenbrough spoke about marriage as a vow before God and witnesses, while Joel Brokenbrough said the wedding should center the bride and groom. Their choices made them a symbol of a simpler kind of ceremony during a period when many couples were rethinking costs after the pandemic. After her death, online tributes returned to those same themes of faith, love and family.

As of Sunday, Jonah remained the focus of family updates, with relatives saying he was gaining strength in the NICU. No further public medical update had been announced, and the cause of Kiara Brokenbrough’s death remained unreleased.
