Woman Allegedly Attacked by Raccoons While Sleeping in Her Home

KANSAS CITY, MO – A Missouri woman, Amanda Howery, has filed a lawsuit against her landlord after she was allegedly attacked by raccoons that fell through a damaged ceiling while she was asleep. The lawsuit was filed against SCI REI LLC and Sage Door Property Management LLC in the Jackson County Circuit Court on August 16, according to court records. A summons was formally issued to both entities on August 19.

Howery is seeking a minimum of $25,000 in damages for the incident, which she claims resulted from negligence on the part of the rental companies. The incident occurred in February 2023 at her rental home in Kansas City. Howery alleges that the property was in a state of disrepair, with an open hole in the roof and a compromised ceiling.

The plaintiff claims that she was unaware of the poor conditions of the property prior to the raccoon attack. She argues that no reasonable person living in the unit would have anticipated the ceiling damage. The lawsuit includes two counts of negligence, asserting that the rental companies either knew or should have known about the dangerous conditions of the premises.

The alleged raccoon attack has reportedly resulted in medical expenses, disfigurement, and lost wages for Howery. She also claims to have suffered mental anguish and a loss of enjoyment of life, both past and future.

The legal representatives for SCI and Sage Door have not yet responded to requests for comment on the case. Court records indicate that the next hearing in the case is scheduled for December.
