A Florida woman, Stephanie Wegman, 46, was recently apprehended by local authorities after being found in an inappropriate situation in a historical cemetery. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has charged Wegman with multiple drug-related offenses, although these charges are not directly linked to the outdoor incident.
The event reportedly occurred on the afternoon of March 27, at the Wild Cow Prairie Cemetery, a small, county-owned rural cemetery near Bushnell. Bushnell, the county seat, is a small city in central Florida, located roughly 50 miles west of Orlando and about 60 miles northeast of Tampa.
State Trooper W.R. Kelly, who reported the incident, stated that he had stopped at the cemetery for the benefit of his K9. The Wild Cow Prairie Cemetery, which ceased burials in the 1920s, has been inactive since then. However, thanks to the efforts of family members and local preservationists, the cemetery has been properly surveyed and preserved, as confirmed by the Florida Division of Historical Resources.
Upon his arrival, Trooper Kelly noticed a white Nissan with the windows down and no one in the immediate vicinity. Upon further investigation, he allegedly spotted a man and a woman at the back of the cemetery engaged in sexual activity. Two other law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and also observed the couple.
The officers approached the couple and asked for identification, as the cemetery was closed to the public at the time. The couple complied, returning to the Nissan to retrieve their clothes, a blanket, and the woman’s ID. A fourth law enforcement officer arrived at the scene and conducted a “free air sniff” of the vehicle with the K9, who reportedly alerted the officer to a “trained odor.”
A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly revealed methamphetamine, Xanax, and Oxycodone. The Florida Highway Patrol charged Wegman with one count of drug trafficking and two counts of drug possession. The sheriff’s office added charges of drug possession, marijuana possession, and methamphetamine possession, as well as two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.
The man who was allegedly with Wegman at the cemetery was taken to a local hospital for a preexisting leg injury, according to the report. He has not been charged. Wegman is currently being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court for her arraignment on May 12.
