Woman Fatally Shot While Visiting Boyfriend in Hospital

Police said Jessica Cyrus was visiting hospitalized James F. Lawson when she suffered a fatal gunshot wound inside his patient room.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A Kansas City man has been charged with second-degree murder and two other felonies after authorities said his girlfriend was fatally shot while visiting him inside an Independence hospital patient room early Thursday.

James F. Lawson, 39, faces charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm in the death of Jessica Cyrus, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. Independence police said the incident occurred about 1:37 a.m. Oct. 22 at a hospital in the 19600 block of East 39th Street. Local reports identified the facility as Centerpoint Medical Center. A judge set Lawson’s bond at $250,000 cash only.

Police said Cyrus had gone to the hospital to visit Lawson, who had been admitted as a patient. Officers were called later that morning after Cyrus was found dead with a gunshot wound to her chest. Lawson had left the hospital by the time officers responded, but police later located him nearby and took him into custody. Authorities said everyone believed to have been involved in the case has been accounted for and no suspect remains at large.

Court records described surveillance video that investigators say captured part of the sequence inside the patient room. According to prosecutors, the footage showed Lawson in a wheelchair facing Cyrus as she appeared to struggle to breathe and began bending forward. Investigators said Lawson could then be seen moving around his pants and hip area while holding what appeared to be a dark object in his right hand. The footage does not by itself establish every detail of what happened inside the room.

KMBC reported that court documents showed Lawson entered the room at about 1:37 a.m. and closed the door, which did not fully latch. The door later opened, allowing the surveillance camera to capture activity inside. Investigators said Cyrus could initially be seen moving, but later footage showed no additional movement after the door opened again. Police did not report finding a firearm in the room in the accounts reviewed.

Officers who arrested Lawson said they found a holster on his hip and ammunition in his wheelchair, according to court records and the prosecutor’s office. During questioning, Lawson reportedly told detectives that his memory of the night was unclear because of an infection, delirium and medication he had received while hospitalized. He did not provide investigators with an explanation for Cyrus’ gunshot wound, according to the court documents. Those statements remain allegations contained in the criminal case and have not been tested in court.

A nurse working overnight told investigators that Cyrus had been in Lawson’s room and that Lawson repeatedly left and returned to the unit, according to the court documents reported by KMBC. The nurse recalled hearing a loud noise that sounded like someone falling and, separately, an unusual sound from a woman, but could not identify where the sounds originated or when they occurred. The nurse also told investigators that Cyrus appeared to be sleeping when the room was checked and that no obvious injury was noticed at the time.

Centerpoint Medical Center said it was saddened by the visitor’s death and was cooperating with law enforcement. The hospital said the safety and privacy of patients, visitors and employees remained a priority. Officials have not publicly described what security procedures were in place when the incident occurred or explained how a firearm allegedly entered the hospital.

Independence police said their Criminal Investigations Unit continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the homicide. Prosecutors have not publicly announced a motive, and the available official statements do not describe an argument or other event immediately preceding the shooting. The criminal charges are accusations, and Lawson is presumed innocent unless he pleads guilty or is found guilty in court.
