A South Carolina woman is facing charges after allegedly murdering her newborn son moments after his birth. Authorities say 31-year-old An T. Ngo gave birth to a baby boy in her apartment in Easley, South Carolina, on March 7. Following the birth, Ngo is accused of severing the umbilical cord with a metal letter opener and then using the same object to fatally stab her newborn son.
Easley Police Chief Brandon Liner expressed his shock at the horrific scene, stating in a press conference, “I’ve been in this line of work for over two and a half decades and I have never encountered anything this gruesome. I’ve never seen anything this terrible.”
Following the alleged murder, Ngo is said to have placed the infant’s body in a trash bag and moved it outside of her room. The police were alerted to the incident by Ngo’s boyfriend, although it remains unclear whether he was present at the apartment during the alleged crime.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the newborn with severe injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene. “It was very apparent that Miss Ngo is the one who tragically murdered this child,” Chief Liner said at the press conference. He vowed that the police would ensure justice for the baby, who he said “didn’t have a chance at life.”
Ngo was taken to the hospital for medical treatment following the incident. She was released from the hospital on Tuesday and immediately taken into custody by police. Ngo is now facing charges of homicide by child abuse and has been denied bail.
