NEW YORK — Police are investigating the death of a 57-year-old woman who was found with injuries to her head and torso inside a Bronx apartment Friday afternoon, while police sources have identified her son as a person of interest in the case.
Josefa Soto DeGuzman was found unconscious and unresponsive inside an apartment at 1236 Grand Concourse in the Concourse Village section of the Bronx. Police said officers responded shortly before 3:30 p.m. Aug. 21 after receiving a 911 call about an unconscious woman. Emergency medical workers pronounced her dead at the scene. News 12 reported Sunday that authorities had classified the death as a homicide, although police had not publicly named a suspect or announced an arrest.
News 12 reported that DeGuzman was initially identified by family members and that the New York Police Department later confirmed her identity. WABC reported her name as Josefa Soto de Carmen, a variation of the name published by News 12. Because News 12 reported that NYPD later confirmed DeGuzman’s identity, that spelling is being used here.
DeGuzman’s husband told News 12 that he was the person who found her unresponsive inside their home. He said he went into the living room Friday afternoon to speak with his wife and found her on a couch before calling 911. He also told the station that their son was not in the apartment at that time. Police have not publicly released a detailed account establishing what happened before DeGuzman was found.
Police sources told News 12 that DeGuzman’s son had been identified as a person of interest. A person of interest is not the same as a person who has been arrested or charged, and authorities had not publicly named a suspect as of the latest reports reviewed Monday. Investigators also had not announced a motive or publicly described evidence connecting any individual to DeGuzman’s death.
WABC reported that officers found DeGuzman in a fifth-floor apartment with trauma to her head and torso.
