Alyssa Jane Venable, a 23-year-old woman from Virginia, has confessed to the brutal murder of her three roommates. Before her arrest, she revealed to a friend that she had inflicted harm on others and left instructions for the care of her pet dog. Venable was eventually captured following a high-speed police pursuit and subsequent crash in New York.
Venable has pleaded guilty to the murders of Gregory Scott Powell, 60, Carol Anne Reese, 65, and Robert John McGuire, 77, as per online court records. The gruesome triple homicide was uncovered on the evening of June 4 when another roommate returned to their shared home in Spotsylvania, discovered a body, and promptly notified the authorities. Upon their arrival, deputies found the three victims and noted the absence of Venable’s car.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office reported that the three victims, two men and one woman, had suffered fatal injuries to their upper bodies. Further investigation and evidence gathering led to the conclusion that Venable was the perpetrator of the crime.
Local media reported that clues pointing to Venable began to emerge after the incident. One such clue came from an individual acquainted with Venable, who stated that she had left her dog with him and was acting out of character. Simultaneously, a friend of Venable informed deputies that Venable had confessed to her that she had harmed people. This friend also disclosed a note left by Venable, indicating her plan to take her own life in California. The note also contained cash, instructions for the care of her dog, and account passwords.
Days later, Venable was apprehended while driving her 2009 Honda Civic on I-86 in New York. She disregarded an attempted traffic stop, drove at speeds of up to 100 mph, and eventually crashed her car when troopers successfully deployed a tire-deflating device.
Venable’s criminal history, which dates back to March 2019, includes charges for property damage, petit larceny, reckless driving, and assault and battery. Her grandmother, during a local news interview, expressed concern for her granddaughter’s well-being, suggesting that Venable could also pose a danger to herself and was in dire need of help.
The news of the triple homicide sent shockwaves through the local community. One neighbor expressed disbelief, while another questioned how someone could commit such a heinous crime. Venable’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 28.
