A woman in Los Angeles is being hailed as a hero after she fatally shot a man who allegedly groped another customer and threatened to kill everyone inside a local beauty store. The incident occurred at Pink Beauty Supply in Compton on Sunday afternoon. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that deputies arrived on the scene around 3:30 p.m. to find a man dead from a gunshot wound.
According to officials, the man had entered the store and began following a female customer. After he allegedly groped her, store employees demanded that he leave. However, the man became increasingly aggressive, verbally assaulting employees and customers and causing damage to store merchandise.
Witnesses reported that the situation quickly escalated. The man was seen holding an object believed to be a knife and made verbal threats to harm everyone in the store. In response, another female customer drew a gun and fired a warning shot. When the man charged at her, she fired a second shot, which proved fatal.
The identity of the deceased man has not been released, but CBS LA reported that he was a 42-year-old with potential gang affiliations and a criminal history that included assaults, robberies, and thefts. The woman who fired the shots was not arrested, as police believe she acted out of fear for her safety. She is currently cooperating with detectives in the ongoing investigation.
The decision on whether the woman will face charges will be made by the LA County District Attorney’s office, according to ABC 7. Witnesses to the shooting have praised the woman’s bravery, expressing relief that she was able to prevent further harm.
Surveillance footage from the store indicates that additional customers were present during the altercation and shooting. Regular customers of the store expressed shock at the incident, describing the store as a usually calm and friendly part of the neighborhood.
Compton has a history of violence, ranking as the ninth deadliest city in America in 2024, according to the Center for Public Safety Initiatives. However, data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department shows an 8% decrease in violent crime over the past year.
