Woman Sentenced After Nearly Blowing Boyfriend’s Head Off

A Nebraska woman, Alyssa K. Roman, 31, has been sentenced to a prison term of six to eight years for the shooting death of her boyfriend, Alan Critser, 33, in 2023. The sentence was handed down by a Douglas County judge on Wednesday, following Roman’s no contest plea last month. The couple shared a home near Hanover Circle and Mormon Bridge Road in Omaha, as per court records.

Roman’s original charge of murder was reduced to manslaughter as part of her plea agreement. She was given credit for time already served, totaling 629 days. In Nebraska, manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 20 years, according to local news sources.

The court heard that Roman had shot Critser in the upper torso and neck with a shotgun on December 29, 2023, after consuming LSD earlier that day. Court documents revealed that she exhibited “signs of excited delirium” when police arrived at the scene.

The police had been alerted to the couple’s residence following a report of a “home invasion” at a different property that Roman had allegedly attempted to enter that evening. The arrest affidavit described Roman as “a white female with pink hair wearing only a shirt and no pants” who had forced her way into the house and “had to be forcibly removed.” Roman fled the scene and was later apprehended at her own residence, where Critser’s body was discovered.

Following Roman’s transportation to the hospital for a medical evaluation, police noticed “apparent blood” on the walls of the residence and “suspected skull and brain matter” in the hallway at the top of the main staircase. Critser was found in the main upstairs bedroom with a gunshot wound. His head was “almost off his body,” according to prosecutors.

A shotgun was discovered in a “separate upstairs bedroom with women’s pants and underwear apparel placed over the top of the shotgun’s barrel,” the affidavit stated. After her release from the hospital, Roman informed the police that Critser “did not shoot himself” and that they were the only two individuals in the home at the time of the shooting. She made “additional incriminating statements” about the killing, along with comments about her LSD use.

Roman admitted to taking LSD around noon that day and was still feeling its effects “a little,” according to a judge’s order in December 2024. She appeared calm and composed until she was informed of her boyfriend’s death, at which point she became hysterical.

Roman told police that she and Critser were discussing “past trauma” before she shot him with the shotgun. She claimed not to remember anything after the incident. Medical tests later confirmed that Roman was under the influence of LSD at the time of the shooting.
