A tragic incident unfolded at a Texas rodeo event on Thursday when a promising young bull rider lost his life. Dylan Grant, a 24-year-old Wyoming native, was participating in the second round of the Wharton County Youth Fair Xtreme Bulls show when he was thrown off a bull named Commander. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association reported that the bull subsequently trampled Grant, causing fatal injuries. The weight of Commander is unknown, but some bulls can weigh up to 2,000 pounds.
Grant, who had been active in the bull riding circuit since 2018, was quickly transported by ambulance and then airlifted to a hospital in Houston. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries. The young cowboy had been making a name for himself in the rodeo community, with winnings of $3,760 this season and career earnings totaling $15,710.
During his time at the University of Wyoming, from where he graduated in 2023, Grant had been awarded the bull riding title at the Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the rodeo community. Kendra Santos, from the No Spin Rodeo podcast, expressed her grief on Facebook, stating that there were no adequate words of sympathy for such a shocking and sad event.
This incident comes on the heels of another near-fatal accident involving a young bull rider. Tyler Kippes was gored in the chest by a bull’s horn while competing in Rodeo Austin less than two weeks ago. He survived after undergoing emergency open heart surgery. Last year, another bull rider, Peter De Luna, was trampled to death during a competition in Bandera, Texas. De Luna had only been riding for about a year.
The fate of Commander, the bull involved in the incident, remains uncertain. The bull had a remarkable 100% “buckoff” rate, successfully throwing off every cowboy who attempted to ride him over the past two seasons. It is not unusual for rodeo bulls to continue participating in events, even after incidents resulting in the death of a rider.
