Normal, Illinois- A second-grade teacher and her ex-husband were tragically found dead in an apparent murder-suicide that occurred at her residence. The Normal Police Department released a statement revealing that Matthew Moore unlawfully entered Amy Moore’s home in the early morning, engaging in a confrontation that resulted in her multiple fatal gunshot wounds. Moore then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The devastating incident has left the former couple’s three young sons, aged 12, 11, and 7, without parents. In response, Amy Moore’s older brother, Thomas Burns, initiated a GoFundMe fundraiser on May 31 to aid in supporting the children during this challenging time. The campaign has gained significant traction.
Reflecting on the outpouring of support, Burns expressed his gratitude, stating, “That response is such a testament to Bloomington-Normal and the surrounding areas,” adding, “It’s just really unbelievable. I don’t think you’d get this anywhere else.”
Amidst the heartbreaking aftermath, it has emerged that Amy and Matthew had divorced prior to the incident. Legal records indicate that Amy sought orders of protection against her ex-husband. Speaking with WGLT, Burns highlighted the numerous warning signs that were present, claiming that the system failed his late sister. He lamented, “There were many red flags, many phone calls, many trips to lawyers to try and address this,” emphasizing the need for stricter safety measures to prevent such tragic occurrences.
