4-Year-Old Dies After Tragic Accident in Family Driveway

Police said the child was struck by his family’s SUV while relatives were preparing to leave their home Friday morning.

QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. — A 4-year-old boy has died after being struck by his family’s SUV in the driveway of a

Queen Creek home as the family prepared to leave, police said.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. Oct. 16 at a home on Escalante Road, according to the Queen Creek Police Department. Police Chief Randy Brice said the family was preparing to begin its normal morning routine when the child was struck near the garage and driveway. The boy was first taken to a nearby hospital and later flown to another medical facility in critical condition. Police announced Monday that he died from his injuries the same day as the accident.

Authorities have not publicly identified the boy because of his age. Police also have not said who was driving the SUV or released a detailed account of exactly how the collision happened. Investigators said impairment had been ruled out, and Brice described the incident as an accident rather than suspected criminal conduct. The department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit continues to investigate the circumstances.

Neighbors rushed to help after the boy was injured, arriving before emergency responders reached the home, police said. Officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel then worked to provide aid before the child was transported. Brice thanked the neighbors and first responders who tried to help the boy during the emergency.

Brice said shortly after the collision that the incident had deeply affected the child’s family, neighbors and emergency personnel who responded. He said the department was working to make resources available to officers and community members involved in the response. Police have released few additional details out of respect for the family and because the investigation remains active.

Investigators began a detailed examination of the driveway and vehicle after the accident. Brice said officers planned to create a three-dimensional rendering of the scene and examine the SUV as part of their effort to determine how the child was struck. Police have not announced the results of that analysis or said whether visibility from the vehicle played any role in the collision.

Initial reports Friday said the boy remained in critical condition after being flown to a hospital. The Queen Creek Police Department confirmed Monday that he had died later on Oct. 16. The announcement changed what had initially been reported as a serious injury investigation into a fatal accident investigation.

Some early local reports described the location using different nearby cross streets, but authorities consistently said the collision occurred in the driveway of the family’s Queen Creek home. Police have not released the home’s exact address, and the circumstances immediately before the SUV struck the child remain under investigation.

The case remains with the Queen Creek Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges and have continued to characterize the death as a tragic accident. No additional information about the child’s identity, the driver or the investigation’s findings had been released as of Tuesday.
