A 37-year-old woman, Elizabeth Ann Bohrer, was arrested after she drove her minivan erratically through a Pennsylvania festival, leaving a 6-year-old boy critically injured and two adults in stable condition. The incident occurred during the closing of the Kipona Festival in Harrisburg over Labor Day weekend. Bohrer reportedly bypassed several barricades and sped down five blocks of stalls.
The young boy sustained severe injuries, including a fractured pelvis, broken jaw, lacerated spleen, and two broken ribs, according to a criminal complaint filed on Tuesday. He remains in critical condition. The other two victims, a man who attempted to stop the vehicle and a woman in a wheelchair, were also hospitalized but are now stable.
Bohrer’s reckless driving ended with her minivan nearly totaled, its hood dented, one headlight shattered, and airbags imploded. Witnesses at the scene were taken by surprise, with many not realizing the danger until people began to scream and scatter.
Upon her arrest, Bohrer was reportedly aggressive towards the officers. She was also taken to the hospital after displaying signs of being under the influence. The Harrisburg Bureau of Police noted her belligerent behavior and her apparent intoxication.
Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams expressed her commitment to working with city law enforcement, Public Works, and festival organizers to ensure the safety of future events. She emphasized that the city will not tolerate such reckless disregard for human life and assured that justice will be served.
Bohrer is currently held in the Dauphin County Prison on a $350,000 bond. She faces nine charges, including aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
The Kipona Festival, a celebration of the region’s Native American heritage, has been a staple in Harrisburg since 1916. The event, which began as a simple water carnival, has evolved into a grand festival featuring vendors, rides, and performances.
