Police said three people approached the victims in a silver Nissan before opening fire and fleeing east Monday evening.
CHICAGO, Ill. — A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were fatally shot Monday evening as they left a gas station on Chicago’s South Side, police said, and investigators were still searching for three people believed to have fled the scene in a silver Nissan.
The shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10 in the 200 block of West Pershing Road, according to Chicago police and several local news reports. Police said the man and woman were leaving the business when three people in the Nissan approached them, displayed firearms and opened fire. The vehicle then traveled east from the area.
Both victims were struck multiple times and taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they later died, police said. Authorities had not publicly released their names in the reports reviewed. No other injuries were reported.
Police did not immediately provide names or detailed descriptions of the three people sought in connection with the shooting. Investigators also had not announced a possible motive or said whether the victims knew the people who opened fire. No arrests had been reported as of the latest available accounts.
Local news organizations described the location somewhat differently. ABC7 Chicago, CBS Chicago and FOX 32 placed the shooting in or near the Fuller Park neighborhood, while the Chicago Sun-Times described the location as Armour Square. All of the reports cited the same 200 block of West Pershing Road, and several identified the business as a Mobil gas station.
Police accounts indicate the shooting happened as the two victims were leaving the business rather than during an incident inside it. Authorities said the three people approached in the silver Nissan, fired at the man and woman and then fled eastbound. Investigators had not released information indicating what happened immediately before the encounter.
Area One detectives are investigating the double homicide. Police had not announced charges, identified the people being sought or released information establishing a motive as of the latest reports. The victims’ identities also remained publicly unconfirmed in the reporting reviewed.
The case remained under investigation Wednesday, with authorities providing no announced arrests or additional details about the people sought in the shooting.
