Family Horror Leaves Five Adults Dead in One Home

Police found four adults dead inside a Douglas home, while a fifth victim died after being taken to a hospital.

DOUGLAS, Ga. — Five adult family members are dead after an apparent murder-suicide at a south Georgia home, where police responding to an active-shooter call found four people dead and a fifth victim critically injured, authorities said.

Douglas police officers and Coffee County sheriff’s deputies were sent to a home on Robin Lane in the Touchton Woods neighborhood at about 11:09 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. One of the victims made the emergency call, according to Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette. Officers found four adults dead inside the residence. A fifth adult was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center and later died. Investigators believe four people were killed before the shooter died by suicide.

Pruette said investigators believe everyone involved was an immediate family member and lived at the home. Police had not publicly released their names as of Sunday, saying officials were working to protect the integrity of the investigation and allow relatives time to grieve. Authorities also said there was no indication of an ongoing threat to people in the surrounding community.

The woman who made the emergency call Friday night had contacted police earlier that same day about a domestic issue at the home, Pruette said. According to the chief, she complained that her husband was smoking inside the house and said he was “killing her with the smoke.” Police have not said whether that earlier call was directly connected to the later shooting, and investigators have not announced a motive.

The Friday night call brought officers back to the property after the situation had turned deadly. Authorities have released few details about what happened inside the house before police arrived, including the precise sequence of the shootings. Officials also have not publicly identified which family member they believe was the shooter.

The bodies are being sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsies, authorities said. Those examinations can help investigators establish causes and manners of death and provide additional evidence as police reconstruct the events inside the home. The investigation remains active, and officials have said some information is being withheld while detectives continue their work.

Douglas is in Coffee County in south Georgia, roughly 200 miles southeast of Atlanta. The killings shook the small community as local officials gathered to discuss the response and express condolences to relatives of those who died. Police asked residents to avoid speculation while investigators work to determine what led to the deaths.

The case is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, but authorities have not publicly disclosed a confirmed motive or detailed the circumstances that preceded the violence. Officials also have not released information suggesting anyone outside the household was involved. Police said investigators would continue reviewing evidence and conducting interviews as they establish a fuller timeline.

Authorities said the identities of the five adults will remain withheld until appropriate notifications and investigative steps are completed. No additional injuries were reported, and police said the public is not believed to be in danger as the investigation continues.
