Leandro Mathias de Novaes, 40, died after his gun was discharged by a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine.
Mathias had brought the gun with him to Laboratorio Cura in Sao Paulo as he was accompanying his mother for an appointment last month, despite being told to leave all metallic objects behind.
The magnetic field from the MRI machine attracted the gun from his waistband and set off a shot.
MRI scans are often used to detect damage to organs and to tissues that X-rays cannot detect. It utilizes a magnetic field and radio waves created by computers to create a detailed image of the body, as described by the Mayo Clinic.
Mathias was sent to the hospital after the shooting and died of his injuries last Monday, Feb 6, as CNN Brazil, and Folha De S.Paulo reported. The Order of Attorneys of Brazil in Cotia also confirmed the “unfortunate” death of Mathias.
The spokesperson for Laboratorio Cura said that their team had warned Mathias and his mother to remove any metallic objects, and he had signed forms regarding the in-office protocols.
They added that they had followed all safety protocols and procedures. Mathias had a TikTok account with nearly 8,000 followers, and his videos had about 50,000 likes.
The police also confirmed that the gun used in the incident was his.
