Georgia Woman Faces Multiple Charges After 6-Year-Old Son Found Dead in Burned Apartment

PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. – A tragic discovery occurred in Peachtree Corners when a 6-year-old boy was found unresponsive with multiple stab wounds amidst the aftermath of an apartment fire. The boy, identified as Jayveon Pruitt, later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

Authorities have since arrested and charged the child’s mother, A’zaria Shante Burton, 23, in connection with his death. Among the slew of charges against Burton are Malice Murder, Felony Murder, and First Degree Arson. Presently, Burton is held at Gwinnett County Jail without the possibility of bond.

The incident unraveled in the early hours of October 19 when both the Gwinnett County Police Department and the Gwinnett County Fire Department responded to a fire at a residential complex located at 4900 Springs. Following the sound of an active fire alarm, first responders entered a ground-floor apartment, leading to the grim finding of young Jayveon.

As part of their preliminary investigation, officers scoured the vicinity for any potential leads. Around 9:15 a.m., they located a woman, later identified as Burton, in a state of disarray near the scene. Her appearance—damp clothing and mismatched footwear—prompted her detention for further inquiries.

Subsequent investigation linked Burton to the apartment where Jayveon was found. After a medical evaluation, she was questioned by authorities and then incarcerated at the Gwinnett County Jail.

While investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident, the motive remains unclear. The community is urged to assist in the ongoing investigation by providing any pertinent information to Gwinnett County Police Department detectives.
