Brandon, Mississippi – A 14-year-old girl is facing charges of murder and attempted murder after allegedly shooting her mother and wounding her stepfather in their home. The disturbing incident took a chilling turn when the teenager reportedly invited a friend over to view her mother’s lifeless body, according to authorities.
Carly Madison Gregg, the suspect, was arrested in March and is being tried as an adult. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges. In a recently released preliminary hearing recording, investigators discussed the teenager’s strangely calm demeanor after the alleged shooting, captured on home security cameras.
The footage reveals the moments leading up to the tragic events. The suspect and her mother enter their home, and sometime later, the suspect is seen entering her mother’s bedroom. Investigator Zachary Cotton from Rankin County described the sequence of events. “Then you hear a gunshot, a scream, followed by two more gunshots.”
The security camera video also shows the suspect returning to the kitchen, where she is seen texting on her phone. Further investigation revealed that she was allegedly messaging her stepfather, asking when he would be home. Shockingly, between the shootings, the suspect is seen allegedly “singing to her dog,” said Cotton.
Authorities claim that the suspect asked a friend to come over, characterizing it as an emergency. The friend’s father drove her to the residence, where the suspect allegedly proceeded to show her the body of her deceased mother. The investigator claims that the suspect also displayed the murder weapon to her friend and admitted to firing three shots each at her mother and stepfather.
According to police, when the stepfather arrived home, the suspect shot him in the shoulder. However, he managed to fight her off and she fled across their backyard. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter near the house. The stepfather, identified as a math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, is recovering from his injuries.
The motive behind this tragic incident remains undisclosed. As the trial progresses, more details are expected to emerge. The community is left shocked and mourning the loss of the victim, described as a talented individual in mathematics, technology, and the arts.
