PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A husband and wife were hospitalized in critical condition after police said the man shot his wife and then himself Wednesday afternoon during a domestic dispute inside a vehicle on North Broad Street in North Philadelphia.
Philadelphia police responded at about 2:49 p.m. Sept. 9 to the 2900 block of North Broad Street, near West Glenwood Avenue, after reports of a double shooting. Police said a 36-year-old woman had been shot twice and a 41-year-old man had suffered what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both were taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.
Police said the woman was transported to the hospital by officers, while SEPTA Transit Police transported the man. Authorities had not publicly released the names of either person by Wednesday night. Investigators also had not announced any criminal charges, and the circumstances leading to the shooting remained under investigation.
Police told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the shooting involved a husband and wife and occurred inside a Volvo on Broad Street. Authorities described the incident as a domestic dispute and said a gun was recovered from the scene. Police had not publicly established a motive or provided a complete account of the events immediately before the gunfire.
Witnesses interviewed by Action News said they saw the man and woman arguing shortly before shots were fired. One witness said the argument occurred near or inside a black Volvo. Action News also reported, citing sources familiar with the investigation, that an argument was followed by a crash before the shooting. Police had not publicly confirmed all details of the witness and source accounts Wednesday night.
The gunfire also damaged another vehicle nearby. Action News reported that a bullet struck a black SUV and shattered its rear window while a child was inside. Police said the child was not struck by gunfire but suffered minor injuries from broken glass. The child was taken for medical treatment and was expected to recover. No additional injuries connected to the shooting were reported.
The incident occurred during the afternoon along a busy section of North Broad Street. Investigators remained at the scene as detectives worked to document evidence and determine the sequence of events. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group was handling the investigation.
Early reports from police confirmed the ages and injuries of the two adults but did not initially provide details about their relationship. Later reporting, including information attributed to police and other law enforcement sources, identified them as husband and wife. Authorities had not publicly released further information about their identities or said what may have prompted the dispute.
Both adults remained listed in critical condition in the latest reports available Wednesday night. Police had not announced a change in either patient’s condition or released additional findings about the shooting. The investigation remained active.
