“Karate Kid” Actor and Son of Hollywood Legend, Chad McQueen, Dies at 63

Chad McQueen, a prominent actor in the “Karate Kid” series and the only son of the late Hollywood icon Steve McQueen, has died at the age of 63. Chadwick Steve McQueen, as he was born, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, at his home in Palm Desert, California. Arthur Barens, his long-serving attorney, confirmed the news, attributing the cause of death to organ failure, a consequence of an injury he suffered years prior.

McQueen, who is most recognized for his portrayal of Dutch in the “Karate Kid” movies, was reportedly in the company of his children, life partner, and Barens at the time of his death. His wife Jeanie and two of his children, Madison and Chase, confirmed his passing through a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram.

The family’s statement expressed their sorrow, stating, “We announce with a heavy heart the passing of our father Chad McQueen. His remarkable journey as a loving father to us, and his unwavering commitment to our mother, truly exemplified a life filled with love and dedication. His passion for racing not only showcased his exceptional talent but also served as a way to honor his father’s legacy, a testament to the values instilled in him.”

The family also expressed their intention to continue McQueen’s legacy and that of their grandfather. They requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time and remember and celebrate his extraordinary life. The statement was signed by Jeanie, Chase, and Madison.

McQueen is also survived by his son from his first marriage to Stacey Toten, Steven R. McQueen, a 36-year-old actor known for his role in “Vampire Diaries.” Chad and Toten were married from 1987 to 1990.

In addition to his role in the “Karate Kid” franchise, McQueen also starred in the 1993 film “Firepower” and 1998’s “Surface to Air.” He was a staunch defender of his father’s legacy, producing two documentaries about the Hollywood legend, “I Am Steve McQueen” (2014) and “Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans” (2015).

Like his father, McQueen had a passion for auto racing. Despite fans’ hopes for him to reprise his role as Dutch in the “Karate Kid” spinoff “Cobra Kai,” he chose to focus on his company, McQueen Racing, which specializes in automotive projects, films, and motorcycles. In 2006, a car crash during a practice session for the Daytona International Speedway’s Rolex 24 race nearly claimed his life and ended his career as a professional driver. It remains unclear whether this accident contributed to his health struggles in recent years.
