FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Panic gripped Glenbrook Square Mall in Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon as gunshots rang out in the mall’s food court. The incident, which occurred just after 2:30 p.m., left one person injured and a suspect at large. Authorities swiftly apprehended one individual, but another remains on the run.
The Fort Wayne Police Department swiftly responded to the shooting, leading to the arrest of 22-year-old Brandon D. Key Jr. Key Jr. now faces multiple felony charges, including criminal recklessness, intimidation, and resisting law enforcement. However, authorities are still searching for the second suspect involved in the incident.
Following the shooting, the Fort Wayne Police Department issued an Emergency Alert and closed down Glenbrook Mall. The closure will extend for the rest of the day. Sgt. Juan Gutierrez, the public information officer for the FWPD, stated that there is currently no immediate threat to the public.
According to Sgt. Gutierrez, the shooting took place in the mall’s bustling food court, where two armed men were involved. However, only one of them discharged their weapon, causing a non-life-threatening injury to a bystander in a lower extremity. Additionally, another individual ended up hospitalized with a potential fracture due to the ensuing panic among shoppers.
Following the incident, law enforcement converged on Dan’s Porch and Patio, near the mall, where they apprehended Key Jr. This development was captured on video. Authorities are currently working to clear out the mall, with officers on the scene until at least 4 p.m.
The shooting at Glenbrook Square Mall marks the third such incident in the past year. The previous shootings occurred on July 8 and September 1, both in 2023. These incidents have raised concerns about safety and security at the popular shopping destination.
While the investigation continues and the second suspect remains at large, Fort Wayne residents and mall visitors are left grappling with the aftermath of yet another act of violence in their community.
