MIAMI, FL — A mother and daughter were fatally shot in their Miami apartment on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of the daughter’s ex-boyfriend on charges of murder, according to the Miami Police Department.
Isbelsy Olivera, 22, and her mother Irisbel Cartalla, 50, were found dead from gunshot wounds around 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning, police said. Shortly after the incident, Carlos Travieso, 48, arrived at the West Miami Police Department and allegedly confessed to “assassinating” two people in Spanish, as stated in an arrest report.
The arrest report revealed that a witness identified Travieso as the shooter from a photo lineup. Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities allegedly captured Travieso walking around the apartment complex approximately 30 minutes before the shooting and then entering the building after Cartalla opened the door for the witness.
According to the police report, once inside the apartment, Travieso proceeded to follow Cartalla and pulled out a concealed firearm that then led to the fatal shooting.
Police identified Travieso as an “estranged ex-boyfriend” in a press release. NBC Miami reported that he was Olivera’s former boyfriend.
Travieso has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is currently being held without bond. It remains unclear whether he has entered a plea.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with funeral arrangements for the mother and daughter. Olivera would have celebrated her 23rd birthday on December 21st, while Cartalla would have turned 51 on Saturday.
