Summerville, South Carolina – One person has been killed in an officer-involved shooting at a Chick-fil-A parking lot on Wednesday afternoon. An off-duty officer was reportedly involved in an altercation, which escalated and resulted in the shooting. The Summerville Police Department is currently investigating the incident in collaboration with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
According to a witness at the scene, paramedics performed CPR on the victim before covering him up. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that the individual died from a gunshot wound. The identity of the deceased is being withheld until his family can be informed.
The off-duty officer was struck by a vehicle during the incident and sustained non-life threatening injuries. He was conscious and able to communicate when he was transported to a hospital. The coroner expects the officer to be released from the hospital later on Wednesday evening.
Coroner Darnell Hartwell expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, acknowledging the difficult nature of such incidents. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office will work alongside law enforcement to determine the deceased individual’s identity.
