Outspoken Democratic Congresswoman Passes Away

Houston, Texas – Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat from Texas, has passed away at the age of 74 after battling pancreatic cancer, according to a statement released by her office on Friday night.

Representative Jackson Lee, who had been serving as a member of Congress for the 18th Congressional District of Texas for the past 30 years, revealed last month that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Her office referred to her as a “fierce champion of the people” and highlighted her dedication to issues of racial justice, criminal justice, and human rights, with a particular focus on women and children.

Before her career in Congress, Jackson Lee served as a judge and later won an at-large Houston City Council seat in 1989. Last year, she ran an unsuccessful campaign for Houston mayor, instead opting to seek re-election in Congress.

Throughout her time in office, Representative Jackson Lee achieved numerous legislative victories, including the establishment of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

Lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, expressed their condolences for the loss, describing Jackson Lee as an “inimitable force for change” and a “warrior for justice.” The Congressional Black Caucus also paid tribute to Jackson Lee, hailing her as a “titan” and a “stalwart member of Congress.”

Representative Jackson Lee is survived by her husband, Elwyn Lee, and her two children, Jason and Erica. Funeral arrangements are currently pending.
